The International Lyric Academy is celebrating 30 years of success by partnering again with Opera Carolina. In 2024, the ILA will offer the opportunity for the Musical Theatre Program to participate BOTH in the program in Charlotte, NC, AND in Vicenza, Italy. Please note that information for the Musical Theatre Program is different than the other programs, so read information here carefully.

Musical Theatre Program

Want to professionally train in Musical Theatre in Italy in the summer of 2023?

The International Lyric Academy has been the premier Summer Training Program in Europe for over 29 years for Classical Singers and Musicians. Now, ILA has a unique opportunity for High School, College and Adult Musical Theatre Performers in an intensive Summer Training Program in Charlotte & Italy with industry professionals, culminating in a production of the East Coast (and International) Premiere of “With A Song in My Heart: The Romance of Richard Rodgers”, as well as a concert while in Italy. Space is limited. The International Lyric Academy Musical Theatre Summer Training Program (MTSTP) is a professional, intense environment in which a small group of Musical Theater performers, aged High School through Adult, hone their skills on stage, in concert, in the studio and in masterclasses. The MTSTP trains students in courses such as Acting/Scene Study, Musical Scene Study, Vocal Performance, Vocal Technique, Dance/Movement, Audition Technique, and the Business of Theatre.

APPLICATION DEADLINE Applicants are encouraged to apply on or before February 1 for full casting consideration. Following this round of auditions, further applications will be accepted on a per case basis.

AUDITIONS

  • Select two or more contrasting Musical Theatre vocal selections that demonstrate your ability to act and sing. One should be Golden Age (1943-1965) or earlier, and one Contemporary. Please have sheet music clearly marked and in your key. If you are doing an online audition, you must perform with a live pianist or an instrumental track (no a capella, no pre-recorded voices). All selections must be memorized. There will not be a Dance Audition, but please note in your audition form your dance experience.

 

Musical Preparation and Placement As a student in the Musical Theatre Program, you’ll be expected to bring the following items:

  • Dance/jazz shoes for an indoor dance floor

  • All-black clothes and shoes

  • Comfortable clothes for class and rehearsal

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Towel or yoga mat

  • Charged phone with recording app

  • All scores and MT repertoire loaded onto a tablet

  • All recordings for the shows on your phone.

  • An in-class journal.

Note: Wi-Fi is not available everywhere, so please make sure these items are fully downloaded to your devices!  Also, please keep in mind that it is your responsibility to keep your items safe.

Attire/Costuming

​

Information will be forthcoming, once accepted into the program, by the creative team.

​

Casting Once registered for the program, Performers will be contacted by the creative team with specifics. There may be requests of additional song submissions for placement purposes, as well as a list of current musical theatre repertoire. Casting assignments will be given by early June, and participants must be fully memorized prior to arrival.

Musical Theatre Master Classes & Workshops Options All master classes are open to the public. Musical Theatre and Opera Master Classes welcomes performers candidates from both programs to participate.

Musical Theatre Performance Master Class: In this Master Class, you’ll be asked to sing a full song from the Musical Theatre canon. You’ll then receive feedback from industry professionals on all aspects of the musicality and interpretation.

Musical Theatre Audition Workshop: In this audition workshop, find out how to nail your next audition, from choosing your repertoire, introducing yourself, and construction of your headshot and resumé, to the many other dos and don’ts of audition etiquette. Bring your own sheet music and two contrasting selections (ideally 16–32 bars each) in the correct key. Hard copies of headshots and resumés are encouraged as well.

“What’s Next” Workshop?: After this exciting, intensive program you may be asking yourself how you can continue to develop your craft, boost your morale, and prepare for a career in musical theatre. What further training do you need, and what does it take to be a professional? In this class, engage in a faculty-led group discussion while sharing strategies with your peers.

Business of the Business Workshop: In this workshop, get in to the nitty gritty of how to  successfully navigate being a working MT professional in the 21st Century. This will include talking through specifics of financial strategies, social media interaction, where to find audition notices, maintaining a high standard of training, achieving holistic results, balance, and perseverance.
